Jaw problems

Keep jaws in line for healthier teeth

If your upper and lower teeth are incorrectly aligned, you can experience problems with your teeth and gums, your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and your facial muscles.

If you clench your jaw and grind your teeth (known as bruxism), it can cause facial pain, headaches, clicking when chewing, as well as pain that radiates to the neck, shoulder or back.

Treatment for badly aligned jaws and bruxism can include:

  • A custom-made appliance which changes the position of the jaw – this relaxes the muscles and also helps prevent tooth wear
  • Orthodontic treatment which realigns the jaw
  • Maxillofacial surgery to correct any jaw problems
  • Replacing missing teeth to improve the ‘bite’
  • Improving ill-fitting bridges
