Root canal treatment

Getting to the root of the problem

If the inner part of the tooth becomes infected, we can use root canal treatment to prevent the infection from spreading and help save the tooth from extraction. Problems such as severe decay, damage or a large filling can cause infection in this soft part of the tooth, known as the pulp.

During treatment, we remove the infected pulp and flush the root canals with an anti-bacterial solution. We shape these canals with tiny instruments and wash again to remove any debris. We then fill the canals with a rubber compound and finally restore the tooth with a permanent filling or crown.

Although many people think root canal therapy is painful, we use a local anaesthetic, so it should be similar to having a normal filling. Also, root canal therapy is more cost-effective than replacing a lost tooth.

To keep your root canal treated tooth healthy, you need to maintain a regular oral hygiene routine and attend check-ups so we can spot any problems.
